Option A: Product-Based Planning

The members of the SSI team could adopt a product-based approach if they embraced the notion that their organization operated like a (disorganized) factory. They could begin by identifying the unrecognized “products” produced by their employees. How? By taking inventory. Then they could work backward from these to create BOMs. And from the BOMs, they could generate realistic, quantified schedules of work activities, labor requirements, and physical infrastructure needs. But it never occurred to the members of the SSI team to think of their knowledge work organizations as similar to factories. So, naturally, they did not consider Option A. (Spoiler: They did not want to consider Option B either, but we will return to that topic later.) Here’s how they improvised their improvement efforts.
